Dutchess Land Conservancy Reaches 30,000 acre Milestone!
In 23 years organization preserves 30,000 acres of important open land.
Millbrook, NY – Dutchess Land Conservancy has completed an unprecedented
year of land preservation by reaching a major milestone - protecting a
total of 30,000 acres. In 2008 DLC recorded its largest easement ever,
1650 acres, protected more acreage in a single year than ever before
(3,180 acres), and reached a tremendous milestone – 30,100 acres of
protected land. This is quite an accomplishment for an organization of
this size.
“We had an amazing year last year and want to offer our sincere thanks
to all of the conservation-minded landowners, municipalities, our county
and state partners, and other groups that DLC works with who have helped
ensure that vital land resources crucial for the well-being of Dutchess
County residents will be forever preserved and protected,” noted Becky
Thornton, DLC’s President.
Conservation Easements are a unique tool used for preserving land.
Private landowners voluntarily extinguish future development rights on
their property for perpetuity, while preserving critical resources such
as farmland, water quality, habitat, scenic views and rural character.
The land stays in private ownership and on the tax rolls. While the
Conservancy does not own the property it ensures that the land is used
in a responsible manner that benefits all who live in Dutchess County.
Since its founding twenty- three years ago, the Conservancy has been a
committed partner in helping communities manage growth while maintaining
the rural quality of life so unique to Dutchess County.
