On
Thursday, July 21st, we held a Geology Walk at Dover Stone Church in
Dover Plains, NY, led by Vassar College Earth Science Professor Jeff
Walker. Professor Walker described the geologic forces that shaped
the mid-Hudson Valley, from rocks that were formed 450 million years
ago to sediment ridges deposited by glaciers 12 thousand years ago.
He also explained the processes of erosion that formed the Stone
Church cave and the surrounding ravine. Once inside the cave, we
were able to see up close the smoothly rounded rock faces that
indicate many thousands of years of erosion by running water. DLC
President Becky Thornton related how the site came to be protected
by a conservation easement through the collective efforts of the
Town of Dover, Friends of Dover Stone Church and DLC. Thanks to
Professor Walker and all who attended!
