Dutchess Land Conservancy & Audubon NY
Saturday, October 25, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Jesse and Gayle Bontecou Wildlife Conservation Preserve
Learn how to protect native plants and improve forest ecosystems!
Deer are voracious eaters of native plants, yet often leave invasive plants alone. This leads to ecosystem monocultures that are incredibly damaging to our forests by reducing biodiversity and making conditions ripe for even more invasive species. Join the DLC and Audubon NY to get hands-on experience in setting up deer exclosure fencing as a low-cost and effective forest management tool. Deer exclosures allow young tree seedlings and saplings to grow without being browsed by deer. This leads to successful forest regeneration with a wider variety of plant species, including native wildflowers and shrubs, and suppresses the growth and spread of invasive plant species. Please join us as we accomplish this important restoration work. There is a half-mile hike to the worksite. However, once we are there, the work is accessible to all skill levels. We will provide lunch.
