Dutchess Land Conservancy

Saturday, December 6, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Pawling Nature Reserve (Rain Date: Dec. 7)

Join us for a rocking geology walk with Geo Beck!

Everything about land is based on its geology, from soil types and what can grow there, to slope steepness and erosion rates, and more. Local geologist and science communicator, Geo Beck, knows a thing or two about the rocks of Dutchess County. Join the DLC and Geo Beck on Saturday, December 6 for a walk along the trails of the Pawling Nature Reserve to explore its unique geology. On our journey, we'll follow the Duell Hollow Brook as it cascades down the eastern flank of Hammersley Ridge, and we'll learn about the eons-long story behind the geological history of this landscape and the greater Harlem Valley. Bring your curiosity, your questions, and a sense of wonder.

There is a short walk with some uneven terrain and slight elevation gain from the parking area to the waterfall, where the majority of Geo Beck’s discussion will happen. After that, there will be an addtional brief walk from the waterfall to the cave, where there will be another short discussion. To get to both locations, the hike will be a quarter mile and gain around 100ft of elevation. After that, we will hike to the top of the Hammersley Ridge and enjoy the crisp late fall weather, with a bit more geology conversation. If you choose to only hike to the falls, that is where the majority of the conversation will happen.
