DLC Volunteers preparing to remove invasive plants at the Roger Perry Memorial Preserve in Dover Plains.

Hundreds of millions of years of geologic processes have created an amazing wonder in Dover Plains - white sands, miles upon miles from the nearest seashore. As with many areas in Dutchess County, non-native plants threaten to disrupt the delicate ecosystem of the Nature Conservancy's Roger Perry Memorial Preserve, found in the hills near the Connecticut border. DLC volunteers responded to the call to help this little gem out and arrived on a pristinely beautiful Thursday afternoon to give of their time and energy. Learning first how to identify Autumn Olive and other invasives that are encroaching on the fragile habitats of the preserve, volunteers then went to work removing non-native plants to improve the growing conditions for the native red cedars that grow here, as well as the mosses and grasses found in the rich wetland fens of the preserve.  It was a tough but rewarding day, and we thank the volunteers for their hard work and enthusiasm.
