Soil Health Workshop Web NewsDr. Jane Lucas of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies led a talk and demonstration on the importance of soil health.
As part of our continuing Down to Earth Workshops in collaboration with the Columbia Land Conservancy, farmers, landowners, and gardeners from Dutchess and Columbia counties attended the latest workshop on Soil Health. Dr. Jane Lucas of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies first led a presentation on the continued capacity of the soil to function as a vital living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and people. Guests then went out in the field to view Dr. Lucas' current soil experiments and test the local soil, including for its compaction and ability to absorb water, among many others features.

If you're interested in soil health - and who isn't? - be sure to sign up for our Earth Matters online webinars beginning November 1. This season's focus will be on soils. Our first speaker is Jeff Lowenfels. Dr. Lucas will return later in the season and we have many other exciting speakers lined up.
